Fashion offers social interaction, as it is integrated into expression, creativity, transformation, and attraction. Rethinking the practice of fashion to be as intimate as we make our social relationships, there must be ways to localize the system and disassociate fashion from an exploitative industry. While the fashion industry is currently linked to hierarchical consumption in a negative way, there is room to take back control over the system of fashion. Reclaiming clothes making to be a collective and transparent process within and available to our community is the approach I would like to see practiced.
Fiona McElhany (b. 1996) is a designer from Nevada. She graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a Bachelors of Art in Printmaking, and a minor in Analytical Chemistry. She is a founding member of Laika Press in Reno, Nevada and serves on the Holland Project’s Gallery Committee.
